MAGA’s Authoritarian Goal: Making the Truth Unknowable

June 25, 2025

This Goes Beyond Lies

Authoritarian leaders don’t need full belief. They only need confusion. Once trust in facts erodes, power moves without limits. MAGA leadership has spent years breaking the systems that verify truth. Institutions gutted. Experts removed. The public lost in a maze of conflicting claims. The Iran strike shows exactly how this works.

Why Hollow Out the Intelligence Community?

Even before the strikes, the truth-finding machinery had been dismantled. Under Trump’s second term, intelligence agencies lost thousands of experienced analysts and many with diverse backgrounds and perspectives. Newer hires were fired. Oversight groups were stripped of power. Expertise is devalued and hollowed out to make the work more difficult.

Tulsi Gabbard was installed as Director of National Intelligence. Her appointment drew sharp warnings from national security experts. She had repeated Russian narratives, questioned reliable intelligence, and now controlled the nation’s most sensitive information. Many consider her to be a Russian asset, so that placing her in charge undermines the credibility of the entire intelligence apparatus.

As tensions with Iran grew, two stories formed. U.S. intelligence shared, in testimony to congress, that Iran’s uranium enrichment was advancing, but no bomb-making program had been restarted. The capacity existed, but the decision had not been made.  In complete contrast, Israeli officials warned that Iran was dangerously close to producing a bomb.

When asked about the discrepancy, Trump dismissed his own Director of National Intelligence: “Tulsi is wrong.” The president’s public contradiction of his top intelligence officer leaves the public with no clear authority or expertise to trust.

So, who is right? US intelligence, made less effective by its gutting and compromised by an unreliable leader? Or information shared with Trump by Netanyahu and the Israeli government?

Attacks Commence, the Outcome is Unclear

Israel struck first, using covert teams and airstrikes to hit nuclear sites. Trump ordered heavy bombing soon after. Within hours, he stood before cameras and declared total victory. He declared the Iranian nuclear threat wiped out. His Defense Secretary called the strikes final and overwhelming.

Behind closed doors, intelligence reports told another story. Validated leaked documents share that surface damage was extensive. Tunnel entrances were sealed. But underground, Iran’s most advanced nuclear infrastructure remained. The stockpiles of 60% enriched uranium were moved or untouched. Analysts concluded that the strikes delayed Iran’s program by months. The capability had survived.

Congress asked for classified briefings. Trump canceled them. No oversight. No independent verification. The public faced two realities: complete destruction declared by the president, ongoing danger described by the few remaining analysts who leaked their findings.

And with no trusted system left to verify, the public is left stranded between official claims and whispers of what may actually be true.

Why MAGA is Breaking the Institutions

In functioning democracies, facts create boundaries. Experts gather evidence. They debate findings. Policymakers receive those assessments. Oversight committees verify. International monitors confirm. Leaders may argue over policy, but reality stays anchored to shared facts.

MAGA leadership severed that chain. Experts removed. Agencies attacked. Oversight blocked. Each institution designed to verify facts now operates under suspicion or silence. Conflicting stories flood the information space. People stop trusting anyone. The leader remains the only source that matters.

In this confusion, the leader’s version becomes dominant, not because it’s proven, but because the public lacks a trusted system to verify anything else.

Absent Data, Everything is an Opinion

The Iran strike follows a familiar pattern. The same approach shapes how MAGA leadership handles elections, public health and vaccines, immigration, courts, and the economy. The target changes; the method remains steady. Truth doesn’t disappear with one blow. They’re chipping away, until no one can confidently say what is real and factual.

Democracy demands a shared ability to know. Without that capacity, citizens become disoriented, powerless, and easily manipulated. The Iran strike offers more than a foreign policy crisis. It exposes what happens when those in power destroy the very systems built to reveal the truth and guide effective decision making.
